Included on
this page are my top picks for rare game collecting, & top picks
for actual game play. These lists have been compiled from my own
experiences with Intellivision collecting. Many of these games took
years to locate. Some pictures and info is also available for
referrence. There were 125 games originally produced
for the Intellivision entertainment system. This list will show
the rarest of them. One thing to remember is that some games are
beyond rare. One of these games is the "4-TRIS" game which was an
independant game produced after the video game crash of the
80's, by Joe Zbiciak. Games like "4-TRIS" are almost
unobtainable by the common Intellivision game collector. When
looking at my top picks, please remember that a game does not have
to cost alot to be rare. Many of the games that you can get now will
be very rare in a few years.
Top 10 Rarest
games
1. "SPIKER" Super Pro Volleyball
- Many people beleive that "Congo Bongo" is
the holy grail of Intellivision games. Well, they're wrong! I
have only come across a few "Spiker" games, mostly in bad condition.
They are very hard to find! It is quite possible that you will
never see this game. The "Spiker" volleyball game was one of
the last games produced by INTV before they shut down. It's
quantities were limited due to the lack of interest in the
Intellivision games at the onset of the video game crash. The rarity
of the boxed version of this game was enhanced when INTV began to
sell the game in a sealed bag, by mail order only. This was
done to sell off the remaining software without putting any more
money into the production of the ill fated company. They closed
within months. This
perticular game title recently sold for over $1,100.00 U.S. on Ebay!
It is the highest paid sum of money for any Intellivision game to
date.
2. Congo Bongo
- Being the only actual
game that was produced by SEGA for the Intellivision system, "Congo
Bongo" gets my #2 spot. There is no denying that the boxed
version of this game is very hard to get. In fact, you can look for
many years with no luck. The game always fetches 'Dinasaur Dollars'
at auction. It is yet another game that was produced in limited
quantities. This game is the apex of most game
collections.
3. Learning Fun I - "Learning Fun I" was produced as the sequel to "Word Fun".
The game was produced late in the Intellivision era, when game sales
were at their lowest. One thing is consistant of the rare
games. That is that they were the last games
released for the Intellivision system. The games simply were not
being bought by consumers. This would explain the few copies that
still exist, and their subsequent rarity.
4. Stadium Mud Buggies - Yet another late release by INTV, the "Mud Buggies" game
was in production along with "Spiker" at the end. The game appealed
to a wider group of consumers, and was well received by all 7 of the
remaining people still playing Intellivision in 1987. The game was
produced at a time when Monster Truck shows drew thousands of
people. The box of this game is actually worth more than the game
cart! If you have the means, I highly suggest picking one
up.
5. Triple Challenge - "Triple Challenge" was another of the games
created late in Intellivision's life span. The game featured 3 great
mind-bending games in one! The games were (chess, checkers, &
backgammon). The game remains one of my all time favorites.
6. Fathom - "Fathom",
IMAGIC's rarest game, may be one of the hardest games
to find for youe collection. If you have the chance to grab one for
less than $150,... do so quickly. This game has jumped from a rare
game to nearly impossible to get. It actually is not that good
of a game. It is saught after merely because there seems to be very
few out there.
7. "World Series" Major League
Baseball - World
Series is a game made to encompass both the ECS Computer component
& the Intellivoice. It is truely a game ahead of it's time
with multiple angles, excellent graphics, & great game
play! This game is rare in itself, but get the version
released late..."Super Series" Major League Baseball (which is the
same game released without the MLB copyright issues), & you will
have a treasure for sure. While the World Series game goes for
$100 & up at auction, the Super Series game will fetch 2 to 3
times that!
8. Tutankham -
The "Tutankham" game was produced by Parker Brothers, and released
in Europe. The game box features the boy king in all his splender.
The box was made with very sturdy cardboard, and gold trim. Again,
this game will usually fetch high dollar amounts at
auction.
9. "Body Slam" Super Pro
Wrestling
- With great action &
a kick-ass box, this game is truely awsome. It was another INTV late
release game. To get one that is complete is a real task. At
auction, you will pay dearly for it. The box is printed in the super
pro 'white style'. Most of the super pro games had this in
common.
10. Learning Fun II - The "Learning Fun II" game was the INTV
sequel to the Mattel Intellivision game "Math Fun". The game comes
in a cereal flip top style box that is pretty flimsy, much like the
rest of the INTV games. The game pops up every now & then, but
for the most part, is not seen much.
* 4 games that came close to making this list
-
"Mountain Madness" Super Pro Skiing, Turbo,
Melody Blaster, Super Cobra

Why Melody Blaster ?
You may be wondering why
I picked Melody Blaster as a rare game? The "Melody Blaster"
game for the add-on "Intellivision Music Synthesizer" & "ECS"
system, is rarer than you might think. This game usually will
not get the highest prices at auction, but is still very rare. The
key to this is the synthesizer! Most people will not buy the
synthesizer to play the one game that is available for it. To add to
that, most vintage game players do not want to spend the big dollars
to acquire the large keyboard. So, when the game becomes available
at auction, it gets little interest. The only people that want the
game is the collectors. Remember, this is not a list of the highest
priced games, but the rarest games.
Top 5 Fun Games to
Play
1. River Raid
- My top pick for game playing
is the "River Raid" game by Activision. I love action games,
& never get tired of the quick pace of this great game. Fly
through the river canyon avoiding trouble, & blasting
ships & helicopters! What's more fun than
that?
2. World
Championship Baseball - My all
time favorite sports game. I was so happy when this game came
out. With this baseball game, you can play with a friend, or
play the computer. Unlike the original game "Major League
Baseball", the ball flight can be seen with the balls' shadow.
You can also slide into the bases. It is a much better game than the
original. No more Home Run Bunts either!
3. Tower of Doom - The role playing action of the INTV game "Tower of Doom" is
truly awsome. Following suit of the original "Advanced Dungeons
& Dragons"game, as well as the "AD&D Treasure of Tarmin"
game, this one blows the previous ones away.
4. Worm Womper - Another game by Activision that I like. In this game, you
try to keep the pesky bugs & worms from damaging your crops.
Blast them with your bug spray to fend them off! The
programmer must have been on something when comming up with the
premis for this one!
5. Bump N Jump - I loved this game when I was an arcade junky, & I still
love it today. Combining the racing format with the element of
jumping over cars was great. It's a medium paced game with mediocre
graphics, but Damn, is it fun!
(note) The
above lists are the compiled opinions of Psycho Stormtrooper. They
do not have any official significance, or rating. The top 10 rarest
games list was made using information obtained during course of
collecting these games for many years. |
