Interested in
the many games & systems of Intellivision? Well, lets open
the vault to take a look at some of the rarest & my favorite
items.

One thing I love to collect is rare games.
Some of the rarest games in my collection include Spiker super
pro volleyball, Congo Bongo, Stadium Mud Buggies,
Tutankham, & Learning Fun I. If you are lucky enough
(& have the funds) to acquire all 125 games originally made for
the Intellivision system, you may want to start to trade up, or
start collecting variants, or hardware. This is what I have done.
There are many games that were made in multiple countries, therefore
there are many games with different languages in the manual. These
games can be found at flea markets, yard sales, or at online
auctions. There are also different types of Intellivision
systems. Below, you will see many of the rare games, systems,
& extras for Intellivision.

SPIKER Super Pro
Volleyball
Spiker is the
hardest Intellivision game to obtain of the original 125 games
made in the 1980's. INTV was in the process of closing
it's doors when this game was released, so there are not many
of them out there. It is usually at the top of every
Intellivision collector's "Want List". If you were lucky
enough to get one early on, you are one of very few that have
the highest priced Intellivision game (by collectors
standards).
This game was
originally produced in the INTV box, complete with
instructions. The original cart label read "SPIKER Super Pro
Volleyball". Right before INTV shut it's doors, they
offered this game by mail order only. INTV was about to close
and did not have anymore boxes or labels for the game, so they
sent the carts out in a sealed bag with instructions & a
makeshift label. The label read "VOLLEYBALL" in bold, outlined
text.

Super Cobra
Super Cobra is one of the
Parker Brothers games made for the Intellivision. It is
somewhat rare in the United States. This game was released in
two versions.. English, & French. The English version came
with a gold labeled cart, while the French version had a
silver label with the box image on it. The French version of
this game is quite impossible to find. Another
difference is the instruction manuals. The French version game
comes with two sets of instructions in both English, &
French. Both covers have the Super Cobra text in black &
white. The English version has the text outlined in blue.
*(Notice) The differences in the boxes. The English has the
blue line at the bottom. The French version does not have the
blue line, & has French text on the
cover.
Originally, there were no
overlays made for this game. The overlays you see in the lower
picture are from the "Orphan Overlay set". |
|
World Series Major League
Baseball
The World Series game is
one of the best, & hardest games made for the
Intellivision system. You will need to have the ECS
computer component module, along with your Intellivoice &
Intellivision system in order to play it. The graphics were
way ahead of their time with multiple angles of the field, and
stats. I currently have two of these games, a factory
sealed one, & the one pictured.
After the MLB copyright ran
out, this game was released as "Super Series Major League
Baseball". This rare variant of the game is very hard to find.
It is sought after by every major Intellivision
collector. |

 |
FATHOM
Fathom is the rarest of
the Imagic games made for Intellivision. I love the fact
that all of the Imagic game boxes look similar in their foil
printing. The game itself is not all that great. I rate
it average for game play. The fact that it is so hard to find,
drives the price up on it.
The Fathom game shows up
from time to time at auction and always goes for big bucks.
Why it is so hard to find is beyond me. I would think that
Imagic games like Dragonfire, or
Ice Trek would go for more purely
for the game play. |
|
Triple
Challenge
One of the greatest
marketing tricks I saw was when Triple Challenge was released.
This game is actually three games in one! It has Chess,
Checkers, & Backgammon all wrapped up into one game.
But, here is the funny part... If you already have these games
by themselves in Mattel boxes... you have this game.
Leave it up to the Intellivision guys to re-release 3 games in
one package & say it's a new game.
With all of that
aside, this game in it's box is another of the rarest of the
original Intellivision games. I play chess on it from
time to time, & have even produced it's
overlays. |
 |
 |
Defender
Defender is the rarest of
the Atarisoft games. Atari cashed in on the Intellivision
market by making three games.. Defender,
Centipede, & Pac-Man. Although
Pac-Man was by far their biggest
seller, Defender proved to be the one most wanted by
collectors.
The Defender game plays much
like the arcade version with a lack of graphics. It is
still fun to play, even though Atarisoft seemed to do little
to make the game better than the Atari version. All of
the Atarisoft games are signified by their hot pink colored
boxes. |
|
River Raid
River
Raid is one of the many Activision titles made for the
Intellivision. It, along with Worm
Womper, seems to be the most saught after games
by this company. It is one of my favorites to play. One
thing that Activision messed up on with this game was the
overlays. The River Raid overlays have been made in a bad run
of ink it seems. If you have this game, you may already know
that the white paint on the back of the overlays seems to peel
off with age. To have a mint set of the overlays is
rare. |
 |
 |
Stadium Mud
Buggies
Stadium Mud Buggies is a
great title. This game was released just before the
Spiker game just before INTV closed.
The game is very rare in it's complete form with box,
instructions, & cart. The overlays you see in the picture
are from the "Orphan Overlay set".
The game play is
similar to the Motocross game, in
that the landscape & view seems to be from the same
original design. This game is considered very rare, and is
definately one to look for when collecting Intellivision
stuff. |
|
Tutankham
Tutankham seems to be the
rarest of the Parker Brothers games. I have two of these in my
collection... one is sealed mint in it's original shrinkwrap.
It is a very fun game to play if you like D&D style game
play. The Parker Brothers boxes are by far the most sturdy of
all games made for the Intellivision. They will
withstand many years of abuse.
In good condition,
this game will fetch very high dollar amounts at
auction. It is a very collectable game for the
Intellivision enthusiest. |
 |
 |
Learning Fun
II
Learning Fun II was
made as the sequel to the Mattel game Word Fun. It is a rare
game along with it's sister game.. Learning Fun I.
Because Intellivision was already on it's way out in the 80's,
there were not many of either of these games sold. The
game play of this game is somewhat remedial by todays
standards. But, the drive to have a complete collection of
games seems to push the Intellivision collector to seek these
"not so great" titles. Always fetching large sums of
money, Learning Fun I & Learning Fun II are considered
nearly impossible to find these days. |
|
Congo Bongo
Congo Bongo is one of the
hardest games to find for the Intellivision. It was the only
game made by SEGA for the Intellivision system. I
remember playing this game at the arcade when I was young.
Believe me, it doesn't look as good on the Intellivision.
Regardless, it is rare, so I must have it in my
collection. The game was originally made without
overlays, but did come boxed with instructions. The box &
instructions had very nice graphic work, as did the game
cart. Getting one of these for your collection is a must,
whether it be boxed complete, or not.
The overlays for this
game have been produced in the "Orphan Overlay set". The
game play is o.k. The graphics are a little on the blocky
side, but that is to be expected from all of these
Intellivision games. |
|
 |
Slam Dunk Super Pro
Basketball
I found this game very
interesting from the start. It took me quite a long time to
first acquire it, but once I did, I noticed something pretty
interesting. Did you ever notice that this is the only
Intellivision game that featured an actual picture on the
box? That blew my mind. Who are these guys?
And also, where are they now? Just some food for
thought.
The gameplay on the Super
Pro Basketball was top notch for it's time. I still like to
play this game from time to time. Although it did not
originally come with overlays, it did come boxed with
instructions. |

STONIX
STONIX is one of the many
games being made by "Intelligentvision". It one of the
best games ever made for the Intellivision. This game
boasts all of the original Intellivision items... box,
instructions, overlays, & cart!
Intelligentvision produces a
limited number of new games for the old system. Once the short
run of games is sold out, no more will be made. There
were 250 copies of STONIX made, 150
of Minehunter, & 100 of Joe Z's
4-TRIS. They are currently working
on their next title, in which only 100 copies will be made.
Look here to see more about Intelligentvision! |
 |
  |
4-TRIS
Joe Zbiciak (aka Joe-Z),
is well known throughout the Intellivision community. Being a
master hardware & software expert, he produced the now
famed 4-TRIS game. This game was first produced as a
demo for the Philly Classic gaming expo in 2001. Because there
were so many people that wanted one, he decided to do
another run for the Intellivision fans. It has been
years since then & Joe still gets e-mails from
Intellivision collectors wanting the great game. With
help from Intelligentvision, he has decided to make this game
once again in a limited 100 game run! These games are
currently being made by Intelligentvision, so if you want
one... you better hurry! (Go
Here).
You can see
the original 4-TRIS game in the pictures at the left. The
white box is the original regular edition. The purple box is
that of the new re-released Intelligentvision
version. Getting one of these games is like
finding the "Holy Grail"! Look below to see the total number
of 4-TRIS games ever made!

MTE 201 Test
Cartridge
The Mattel Electronics 201
test cart was made by Mattel for service on the 2109
Intellivision system. By putting this cart into the system
& powering up, you can see where a
problem may lie in the hardware. This service cart is
accompanied by an instruction booklet that tells you how to
prform the diagnostic tests.
This cart is considered to be very rare.
There is also a test cart for the Intellivision II which is
even more rare. These items are usually found in a die-hard
Intellivision collector's stash. |
|
 |
Schell Electronics
INTELLICART
Being a great hardware
master, Chad Schell developed the Intellicart so that a user
could play Intellivision games on the computer. These
carts made it possible to download games from respective
sites, & lay them via their own Intellivision
system. This was done by hooking up the cart to the
Intellivision system & to the computer at the same time.
This then let an individual play the games as they were meant
to be played... on the original system.
These carts are very hard to
find. I am not sure exactly how many were originally made, but
I do know that he does not make them anymore. |
|
Compro
Videoplexer
With the Compro
Videoplexer, a gamer can plug in multiple games at the same
time instead of changing carts out. Very few of these
units were originally made. With a capacity of eight games,
this is a great add-on for the Intellivision
system! Simply push the numbered button of the
corresponding game in the videoplexer & it immediately
goes to that game. After years & years of collecting,
I was able to just get one recently.
The Videoplexer is
very rare indeed. It comes in a box complete with
instructions, & a lid for the games. It is packed in a
styrofoam split shell. The one I have pictured is in mint
condition & works great.
If you have the means,
pick one up. You will not be disapointed! |

New ECS computer
components
Recently, I was able to buy some new ECS
(#4182) units along with some ECS
games. I also picked up some Intellivision II master
components. These units were all brand new in their
original boxes. It was cool that they were even sent to me in
the original Mattel shipping boxes. To get a new system in the
box is a dream come true. If you ever see a game or system
that is new, you should keep a close eye on it.
Items like these are very hard to find anymore. Most of
the hidden stashes of these 20+ year old games have been
found.
But, we are hopeful that one
day a box of Spiker volleyball games, or Mud Buggies will pop
up somewhere. Keep your eyes peeled! Comming across a
find like this is like hitting the lottery.
All of the systems that I purchased
in this lot were in mint condition. The ECS computers have
never been out of their original shipping box from
Mattel. |
|
Intellivision
Systems
I currently
have roughly 20+ Intellivision systems in my collection. There
are different models of Intellivision systems, but all will
play the games. Systems in my collection include the
following-
| Original gold Mattel system |
Model 2609 |
| Intellivision II system |
Model 5872 |
| Austrailian PAL system |
Model 3668 |
| Digimed gold PAL system |
Model 5368 |
| Radio Shack Tandyvision |
Model 58-1000 |
| Sears super video arcade |
Model 487.75022 |
| INTV system III |
Model 3504 |
| INTV Super Pro System |
Model 3504 |
| Digiplay system II |
Model 5872 |
| Sylvania system |
Model
MC-100 |
Not everyone collects
these systems, but after you get all the games, you need
something to do. |
  |
 |
System Changer
For all those that had
Atari games, the Intellivision system changer was produced. By
plugging this system in, you could play your Atari games
through the Intellivision system! The system #
4610 was accompanied with instructions.
Yet another very rare item for the Intellivision
collector. |
|
Intellivoice Voice Synthesis
Unit
The Intellivoice was
probably the most exciting add-on for the Intellivision.
It was the first video game system that had actual voice in
it! Mattel then started making games that were enhanced
with voice by using this synthesis unit like TRON Solar
Sailer, Bomb Squad, Space Spartans, & my favorite... B-17
Bomber.
The Intellivoice is
not rare per say, but is an intrical part of any & all
Intellivision collections. The system (#3330)
originally came boxed with instructions. |
 |
 |
Music
Synthesizer
The Music Synthesizer
(#4188) was one of Mattel's all
time flops. They didn't seem to sell all that many
units. It is actually a good unit. The only problem is that
there is only one game that can be played with it! The game
Melody Blaster was developed for the Synthesizer, but no
others. Word is, that there were more games in the works for
the system, but were never realized because of the declining
video game market at that time.
The unit came with
multiple instructions in a long Mattel Intellivision box.
Funny, they were almost the same size as a regular
keyboard!
Items like these are
usually on the tail end of a collection list. It is one of
those items that you would like to have, but are not upset if
you do not. |
